Summary/Abstract: This article examines the evolution of the Institute for Foreign Students “G. A. Nasser” in Sofia from 1976 to 1990. During the 1970s, Bulgaria intensified its relations with Third World nations, resulting in an influx of students from these countries. Among them, Nigerian students formed the majority. As part of their one-year program, they were required to learn the Bulgarian language and attend general education and ideological classes, providing them with exposure to Bulgaria’s socio-political system and culture through the Institute for Foreign Students (IFS). Concurrently, the Bulgarian government dispatched specialists to aid in the development of these nations, necessitating specialized foreign language training. In response, the Institute established a Center for the Study of Foreign Languages in 1976 to prepare Bulgarians for work abroad. The introduction of foreign language courses expanded the scope and responsibilities of the IFS.
