Summary/Abstract: The article is a discussion of editorial ideas of Józef Ignacy Kraszewski in “Athanaeum”, a periodical edited by him from 1841 to 1851 in Vilnus. The ten-year evolution of the editor’s methods is depicted by means of a detailed analysis of his editing of numerous source materials and examples of his, often controversial, interference. Attention is drawn to the strong romantic personality of the editor, who interfered with the texts. Relations between Kraszewski and printers are also shown. The years of publishing “Athanaeum” are particularly important in the context of later achievements of the owner of the Dresden printing office. Therefore, following the examples of Kraszewski’s activities, the article presents the state of the 19th century editorial norm on the annexed territory under the Russian rule, and contributes to the research on the history of Polish editing.
