Summary/Abstract: The aim of article Jan Gawiński’s animal epitaphsin view of the ecocriticism was to use the opticsof human-animal studies shaped as a part of thattitular modern methodology, to verify previousinterpretations of Jan Gawiński’s baroque epitaph,devoted to animals. The thesis focuses on polemicwith the opinions that Jan Gawiński’s animalepitaphs are the expression of nihilism, grotesqueor variations of the animal’s fable. The chapteralso accents the importance of compositionof that poems collection for the lecture of eachrespective piece. Using the ecocritical view madean opportunity to demonstrate that in spite of thepre-modern’s vision of nature (hierarchical chainof being) writers has found an interstice whichhas allowed them express the sense of communitywith animals, feeling of mortal togetherness,empathy, sensitivity of conscience and responsibilityfor friars minor.
