Summary/Abstract: The work of Amalary of Metz Liber officialis is characterised by a very well-developed al- legorical method in the interpretation of liturgical issues. In this study, we are concerned with the analysis of the structure of the preparation for the Easter experience made by thismedieval author, a disciple of the trusted official of Emperor Charlemagne, Alcuin. Drawing on the Latin source text, we discover the theological, spiritual and symbolic significance of the various periods preceding the day of commemoration of Christ’s Resurrection as seen by Amalary. Through this analysis, which is quite extensive due to the volume of material studied, we can understand the grandeur and richness of the medieval liturgy. Although at times the argumentation of Amalary of Metz seems exaggerated and detached from sound thinking, it allows us to understand and appreciate the undeniably powerful significance of the liturgical rites of the time for the Church of that time.
