Summary/Abstract: The mathematics and the models it offers are very helpful for testing social theories. We focus on the history of the relationship between statistics and the social sciences as well as in one of the latest trends in contemporary sociology, such as mathematical sociology. It is argued that a social theory should not be tested by means of a statistical model without taking into consideration whether or not the properties of this model correspond to the theoretical problem the researcher has set out to test. We view mathematics as a general tool for testing the inner logic of social theories and argue that the use of mathematical modeling is a powerful tool for bridging the gap between sociological theory and quantitative analysis. It is concluded that the only way to find the proper statistical model in sociological studies is to go via a mathematical model.
