Summary/Abstract: The non banking financial institutions are institutions providing financial services, licensed by the Bank of Albania pursuant to the regulation “On the granting of the license to exercise financial activity from the non banking subject in the Republic of Albania”. These non banking institutions are entitled to perform all the actions and to provide all the products serving the client, except for the saving accounts. Such institutions play a primary role out of the whole of the financial intermediaries which role has increased by serving a greater number of clients. Compared to the banks such institutions are young in Albania, dating since as of 2000. Among the non banking financial institutions in our country, most of them belong to the microcredit institutions, leasing and due to the wide range of activity, the Albanian Post and Credins Institutions. The main aim of this article is to describe the main types of the non banking financial institutions, the role they played in the country’s economy and the basic products these institutions offer. The analysis of the development of these institutions is based in the analysis of the regulation frame and its enforcement before and after the 2000. The study is divided in two periods: before the year 2000, when non banking financial institutions were missing and after the 2000, with their establishment focusing on their role and help to the country’s economy. From an initial point of view it looks like the banking and the financial market is saturated considering their number and their expanding. As a matter of fact, when the basic functions of the citizens are performed in cash, a variety of services from the different institutions, it is inclined that we are still far from meeting the economical and financial interests of the interested groups of the population (shareholders). The country needs new products that should be provided from both the banking financial institutions and the non banking as well, to the extend where population is and to meet the needs for monetary and financial means of the individuals and the shareholders. Still in our country, borrowing and individual loan are available, mainly in the fields of economy such as construction and infrastructure; that is to say that the acknowledgement and presenting these institutions is yet far from meeting the market’s interests.
