Summary/Abstract: In light of surviving evidence Mundus was not only a prominent chieftain, who in 529 C.E. passed into Justinian’s service and took control of a regionalarmy in Illyricum, but also a commander possessing his own army. Earlier hehad been connected to Theodoric the Great, who had been allowing his pe-ople’s existence within the realm of the Ostrogoths. The death of the king had broken up personal links tying him to Mundus, but the latter couldn’t havecarried out any actions without ensuring his people’s existence. As such, oneshould disregard the hypothesis, that the chieftain could have, in 526, gone tothe Gepids, and only later to Justinian. A visit of Mundus to the Ostrogoths in529, when he had spoken to the emperor, who had took him in along with hispeople, is far more probable. While analysing the historical contexts one musttake into account just how much impact on war campaigns and the situationin the region the appearance of not only a capable chieftain, but also of regi-ments related to him, which could have consisted of a few thousand soldiers, had made.
