Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the distribution of subordinate clauses introduced by the conjunction THAT within complex sentences, focusing on the functions they can perform, and, at the same time, concentrating on a number of transformations that can take place in the surface structure of clauses, namely extraposition, particle movement, passivization, THAT-deletion, analysing the specific structures for each transformation.
