Summary/Abstract: The objective of this research is to study the individual and institutional factors that determine the level of faculty scientific production in the humanities and social sciences in Moroccan universities, using the results of a questionnaire survey conducted among a sample of 341 faculty in the humanities and social sciences from different universities in Morocco. Our results indicated a generally low level of scientific production in the humanities and social sciences and significant individual and institutional disparities. Moreover, they indicated that this production is very varia ble according to gender, rank, field and seniority. Further research on each of these factors, taking into account disciplinary differences, seems necessary. Our results also established that personal factors, including doctoral background and interest and integration in research activities, are the most important determinants of the level of scientific production of SHS faculty. On the other hand, our results did not lead to a significant relationship between institutional variables (teaching, pro motion, institutional support, collegial support and governance) and scientific production. This suggests that the research activity of faculty is very little linked to the institution, and that the actions of faculty in terms of research and scientific production are guided by individual rather than institutional logics.
