Summary/Abstract: The main aim of the studies presented in this article was to construct a tool to assess the stress induced by the prison environment in inmates who are in the custody of the prison system. In the first study (N = 312), the factor structure of the Prison-Related Stress Scale was investiga ted using exploratory factor analysis, with results indicating that the instrument assesses four dimensions: Future-Release, Interpersonal Environment, Worry, Distress Symptoms (Version 1, 29 items). Study 2 (N = 607) aimed to verify and confirm the factor structure of the instrument, which was tested using structural equations. The results obtained confirm the existence of the four factors, with Version 2 consisting of 24 items. The values of Cronbach’s Alpha index (ranging from .689 to .832) and the inter item correlation means (ranging from .298 to .404) indicate an adequate fidelity of the instrument in its preliminary version (validation and calibration).
