Summary/Abstract: Economic empowerment of women in the countries of the Western Balkan can be explored from the aspects of their participation in the labour market and the enforcement of their right to property. Whereas the countries legislatively comply with the international battle against gender inequality, their legal regulations do not fully reflect in practice. The reasons for this lie in traditional customs and beliefs common to a large part of the region that are embedded in its societies. There is a clear collision of legal norms and customs which stands in a way of economic empowerment of women and, in relation to that, in a way of economic development of the region. The article describes the struggle of women to achieve economic independence and explores some venues through which the countries tackle the issues of poor law enforcement.
