Summary/Abstract: Among the fifty leading thinkers analysing the Holocaust and genocide are two Poles of Jewish origin: the lawyer Rafał Lemkin and the sociologist Zygmunt Bauman. The article aims to characterise and compare two concepts of genocide, the circumstances in which they arose, and attempts to answer which concept better explains genocide understood as a historical phenomenon and a specific type of mass crime.
