Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is an anthropological analysis of the meaning of a popular symbol of Bologna – the figure of umarell, a retiree whose passion is observing construction sites. Closely connected with the life of the city, umarell, like the 19th-century flâneur, can be considered a symbol of his era. This is a comic character, which signals his violation of norms regarding, among others, behavior of older people in public space. The problem of umarell’s age becomes particularly important in the era of aging European societies. Umarell can be interpreted as a representative of the world of the past, but also symbolize passive participation in the technological revolution.
