Summary/Abstract: The main hesychastic centers in the 14th century were the monasteries of Mount Athos and those of Meteora. The organizers of these two important Orthodox centers were St. Athanasius the Atonite (10th century), respectively St.Athanasius the Meteorite and Joasaph his disciple (14thcentury). Between their monks there have always been deep spiritualties, in both areas developing a severe anchorite asceticism. Over time, due to the attacks of Agarean pirates, the Athonite monks were forced to take refuge in more secluded and quiet places to practice hesychasm. A favorable place for this was in Stagoús, a region known today as Kalambaka, where the known Meteoras were located. At the top of the biggest rock, Saint Athanasius, together with Pious Joasaph, the former king Jovan Uroš, founded the first community monastery of the Meteoras, also called the stone forest, organized according to the typical aghioritic, having the patron of the Transfiguration and the Theotokos.
