Summary/Abstract: The war in Bosnia and Herzegovina between 1992 and1995 represents a good example of an armed conflict in which religion did not play a decisive role in the outbreak. However, with the development of events, the religious factor - reinforced by extreme nationalism - became an increasingly important factor of identification. Religious affiliation became more important than any other tie that had previously united the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the pre-war decades. This article examines the impact of the two factors, nationalism and religion, on the events during the period prior up to the outbreak of war, and it highlights their role during the armed conflict.
