Summary/Abstract: Gyula Szekfű’s judgments on 19th century historiography were variable and sometimes contradictory, and his views were therefore already very divisive in his own time. The paper examines the impact of his unique historiographical vision on his contemporaries: those who raised similar ideas, supported his attempts at reinterpretation, and those who criticised him, defended the scholarly achievements of previous generations, and drew attention to his unfounded and controversial claims. While Szekfű advocated overcoming contradictions, he himself did much to widen them into chasms. His attempt is tragic because, by criticising his predecessors and often rejecting their achievements, he gave the next generation a distorted historiographical picture.
