Summary/Abstract: The natural law tradition is firmly rooted in American legislation. A key aspect of this law is the concept of the common good. The author points to a change in the functioning of the common good and its recognition through the phrase „greater good”. The condition for achieving the greater good is a compromise, but it does not allow the implementation of the common good as the best possible solution. By determining the scope of functioning of compromise and consensus in social life, the author justifies that only consensus is the way to achieve the common good. If the society is really to implement the rules of its political system, which is democracy, it should do so by consensus.
