MUSTAFA GRABCANOVIC – THE FIRST CHRONICLER OF BJELJINA

Summary/Abstract: The work is dedicated to Mustafa Grabcanovic as the first chronicler of Bijeljina. The emphasis of the work is on Grabcanovic's written legacy on the topic of cultural heritage, published sporadically in local newspapers, the literature and culture paper Brazda, and then in over one hundred and seventy feuilleton texts: "From the past of our region" in Semberske newspaper. In the aforementioned texts, Grabcanovic presented to the public various topics from cultural history and numerous historical events and personalities from our region for decades. Although an amateur researcher, he approached his tasks extremely seriously, searching for reliable historical sources in numerous archive, library and museum institutions in the former SFRY and abroad. At the same time, he supplemented the material with the testimonies and memories of older citizens whose dates of birth went back to the time of the change of Ottoman and AustroHungarian power in our region. Although there are occasional flaws in Mustafa Grabcanovic's texts published in the local press, his work is still essential reading for any researcher of the past of Bijeljina and its surroundings. At the same time, Grabcanovic's work summarizes everything that can be marked as the cultural heritage of our region.
