Summary/Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly restricted crew changes and has led to Long periods of shipboard service in many cases. The Maritime Labour Convention is unclear on this matter and could be improved to ensure a tight control on cases where the maximum duration of shipboard service periods may go beyond eleven months. A proposal for amendment was discussed at the International Labour Office in May 2022. lt has not been adopted but remains a relevant plea to take action.
