Introduction to Pascalian Ethics. From the Reason of the State of Nature to the Heart of the State of Grace

Summary/Abstract: Because an inquiry into a Pascalian ethics cannot be removed from its broader apologetic context, this paper seeks to introduce the reader into the theological and philosophical complexities of the Jansenist controversy. By doing so, we uncovered the difficult task that was revived by the Protestant Reformation and the early modern restoration of the Augustinian theology of understanding the Christian moral law in its relation to the doctrines of grace. Ultimately, this paper tries to work out an ethics of the heart that works its way out of the classical Jesuit casuistry problem.
