Summary/Abstract: A book review of an edited volume "Film and History. An anthology" (2008), edited by Iwona Kurz. Klejsa points out that the publication at least partially fills in a gap in Polish film studies, that is the relative lack of translated monographs and edited volumes. Going through the book essay by essay, Klejsa notes that the selection of the articles forces the reader to reconsider earlier preconceptions about the relationship between film and history. It is so because the relationship is not only relevant in the case of costume dramas, but also those films that during their production are considered contemporary. When discussing the links between film and memory (both private memories and the memory rooted in official cultural practices) Klejsa notes that history has lost the “monopoly over the past”. He concludes that the anthology is valuable in that it provides us with theoretical basis for discussion of functions of history in cinema and for “historical” film analysis. The volume also encourages one to consider once again the area of film reception.
