Summary/Abstract: The delivery of goods from one country to another, in a multimodal system, involves their transport using at least two types of transport (road, sea, air or rail), without being relevant the concrete way in which they are combined. When the type of transport is changed, the transhipment of goods also takes place. The entire commercial operation carried out is governed by the terms of a single multimodal transport contract concluded between the consignor and the multimodal transport operator, which issues the multimodal transport document in negotiable or non-negotiable form. Based on these particularities, throughout this article we aim to clarify the concept of “international multimodal transport of goods”, establishing, at the same time, the relationship between it and combined and intermodal transport. Subsequently, the analysis will consider the legal institution of the international multimodal freight transport contract, which, however, will be limited to the applicable law, the legal nature and the contracting parties, without presenting their rights and obligations.
