Summary/Abstract: The article provides insights into the activities of folk dance groups in Riga, Pārdaugava, as well as stage folk dance collectives. It discusses theories pertaining to the concept of folk dance and examines the deconstruction of this genre. The aim of the article is to delve deeper into the folk dance and stage folk dance scenes, identifying similarities and differences to pinpoint where misunderstandings in genre divisions may arise. To achieve this, semi-structured interviews were conducted with representatives from dance collectives and folklore groups in Pārdaugava. Analysis of the informants’ responses reveals that groups from both genres share more similarities in terms of ideas and beliefs than they might initially appear to, while differences in stylistics and dance form set them apart. Structured rehearsals and high-quality performances are deemed important by all participants, as is the strong emphasis on enjoying each other’s company. It is within these social gatherings that dancers derive the greatest joy from their art.
