Summary/Abstract: This study examines how folklore groups, primarily based in the city of Riga, approach the development of their repertoire. Traditional perceptions typically associate the origins of folk songs with rural rather than urban settings, and existing archives and published folklore materials are predominantly dominated comprised of folklore recorded in Latvia’s regions. The aim of the article is to investigate the repertoire development strategies employed by folklore groups in urban settings, specifically Riga, and the factors influencing these processes. Special attention is given to the role of the folklore festival “Baltica” and associated folklore group performances, as well as the influence of Riga’s physical location. Insights into these processes are gleaned from interviews conducted with members and leaders of folklore groups, focusing on the factors that play a decisive role in their decision-making. The findings reveal that while the sense of place is not directly linked to Riga in the repertoire development process, there is a desire to structure the repertoire by drawing connections to various regions of Latvia or by focusing on specific themes relevant to the folklore group, either temporarily or over an extended period.
