Summary/Abstract: The notion of old age has numerous contexts, both institutional and noninstitutional ones. At the same time old age is defined as well as commonly perceived in an ambiguous way. Moreover, most of the contexts originate in population structure as it looked like many decades ago. Its first of all age dimension has dramatically changed so this looks necessary to redefine the notion of old age in a way that adjusts it to the population situation today. The authors analyze inconsistency of the notion of old age to contemporary challenges for public policy. The analysis presented refers not only to institutions but also to the com-mon perception of old age, to its behavioural, biological, economic contexts. All that in an intergenerational fairness context. The authors also propose a modification of perception of old age that could enable institutional adjustment to real social needs and, on the other hand, to social possibilities.
