Summary/Abstract: This paper presents a systematic review and critical analysis of the literature on the dynamics and challenges of family businesses in Algeria from 2008 to 2023. Over 150 publications were identified through searches of significant databases, covering definitions, characteristics, succession processes, governance, performance, growth, internationalization, entrepreneurship, innovation, and perspectives related to Algerian family firms. The research provided critical conceptual foundations and empirical insights but often remained siloed without fully integrated, dynamic, or comparative perspectives. The review is structured around six thematic areas. Within each, critical contributions and limitations of prior work are examined in depth. The synthesis shows that initial studies established conceptual bases, but constraints like small samples, isolated case studies, and compartmentalized methodologies limited generalizability. In the future, more cross-sectional, longitudinal, multi-sited research combining heterogeneous data and disciplines is needed to develop a comprehensive, actionable understanding of family business realities in Algeria.
