Summary/Abstract: The central motif of the essay is a critical examination of the archival turn in contemporary art.Through the lens of the notions such as “performativity”, “memory”, and theories devoted to interpretingthe archive, the text builds on authors who have explored this phenomenon in contemporaryart. The main focus of this essay is on the expanded documentary practice by Lucia Nimcová, herworks relocating and reactivating archival photographs, in which I detect emancipatory potential thatcould possibly inspire those methodologies in art history that deal with the socialist past in Centraland Eastern Europe.
