Summary/Abstract: It is unanimously accepted that linguistic plurality is more than a simple plurality for designating a thing, each language having its own imaginary that includes a vision of the world. Translation is not a mere operation of transposing juxtaposed statements into another language, but an essentially interpretative practice that resorts to a lot of extra-linguistic knowledge. This is why translation does not simply limit itself to reproducing a meaning, but it gets to produce it and the inherent changes have a certain impact on the receiving culture. Therefore translation is not a simple instrument of the inter-cultural dialogue but functions also as its guiding and transforming agent. The purpose of our study is to reflect on several translation problems raised by certain cultureme in the two novels of the Belgian writer, Henry Bauchau. Although the major difficulty raised by the translation of Bauchau’s novels seems to be, as other translators have indicated, the rhythm of writing characterized by the intersection of several narrative levels or by frequent interrogative structures typical of the French language, the cultural specificities also raise certain problems. Even if the translation from French to Romanian seems facilitated by the similitude between the two languages and cultures, the expressive possibilities of the translator necessitate some pertinent reflections on the referential value of what Michel Ballard calls “désignateur de référents culturels”, namely appellatives, proper names or idiomatic expressions.
