Summary/Abstract: This publication provides a description of the harm reduction approach to drug use as part of public health strategies and discusses the place of social work within it. The main principles, approaches and activities of social work with people who actively use drugs are outlined, as well as the specifics of social work in the field of harm reduction. The main focus is on groups and individuals with addiction who are at risk of social exclusion, have a history of discrimination, are in economic hardship, and need supportive interventions to achieve a better level of social and health functioning. A description is given of the activities that are aimed at reducing harm from drug use and how they are structured in the context of social work.
