Biological determinants of the modified pronunciation of Polish alveolo-palatal sibilants in young adults

Summary/Abstract: The author examined the biological conditions of the tendency to modify the palatality of sibilants [ɕ], [ʑ], [t͡ɕ], [d͡ʑ] in the pronunciation of young adults. The research group consisted of 30 students presenting various degrees of correctness in the implementation of the mentioned consonants. The students went through speech therapy examination which assessed their anatomical conditions, the functioning of the articulators, the correctness of primary activities, the perceptual conditions, and the correctness of the pronunciation of the remaining sounds of the Polish language. The study was quantitative. The tests results were compared with the number of abnormally pronounced sibilants and subjected to statistical analysis. It turned out that there is a clear relationship between anatomical-functional factors and the number of modified consonants [ɕ], [ʑ], [t͡ɕ], [d͡ʑ], so modification of the palatality of sibilants cannot be perceived only as a socially or culturally conditioned manner of pronunciation.
