Analysing the presence of Polish in the linguistic landscape of a London district

Summary/Abstract: The article describes the Polish language in the public space of the London district of Ealing, known as the location of the Polish diaspora. The study presents the status of the Polish language, the issue of the dominance of English over the Polish language, and attempts to answer the question of how these languages combine in bi-/multilingual signage. A methodological framework was adopted to analyse the corpus of signs, covering aspects of semiotic and linguistic analysis, such as context, domain, language dominance, genre, and text function. The Polish language indexes and constructs public spaces in various areas of Ealing as places of identity, and Poles thus contribute through their actions to a high degree of ethnolinguistic vitality of the language.
