Summary/Abstract: The article examines the monody tradition, known in Bulgaria as „Eastern Church chanting“. For us Bulgarians, the Church Slavonic chants are a traditional oral heritage, a natural modal culture, and our folk songs. As the only way of singing in the Bulgarian monasteries and churches for over 1000 years, Eastern Church chanting was also studied in the Bulgarian school until the middle of the twentieth century. Today, unfortunately, it is almost unknown and threatened with extinction. The text discusses the methodological possibilities for its re-introduction in the primary school curriculum and the difficulties associated with its teaching.
