Summary/Abstract: There are three so-called “wife-sister” episodes in the book of Genesis (12, 10–20; 20,11–18 ir 26, 6–11). The plot pattern in these narratives appears to be similar. Yet their contexts and narrative techniques employed by the narrator differ significantly. In this paper the narrative of Gen 20:1–18 is analyzed according to the criteria of the narrative criticism. The analysis of the temporal characteristics of the narrative reveals the strategic importance of multiple analepses (e.g. v.4.6.18), which provoke the re-evaluation of hypothetical characterizations, created by the reader during the initial reading of the narrative. The reconstruction of the chronological order of narrative events reveals the line of a sub-plot, hidden from the reader by means of the multiple analepses. The re-evaluation of narrative characters discloses the importance of the irony, which in this pericope apperas to be used as a tool of characterization and theology. Both, subversive and constructive aspects of irony can be indicated in Gen 20:1–18 pericope.
