Saint Symeon the New Theologian: Exegeses on the Eucharist

Summary/Abstract: In this study, I selected several texts from the writings of Saint Symeon the New Theologian and proposed some interpretations on the coherent relationship between the Eucharist, the revelation of divine light and the sanctification of man. Those mysteries represent the practical effect of the Eucharist and open several applications of a Christological and Calcedonian understanding of Eucharist in the Patristic Tradition (some sourcesIn this study, I selected several texts from the writings of Saint Symeon the New Theologian and proposed some interpretations on the coherent relationship between the Eucharist, the revelation of divine light and the sanctification of man. Those mysteries represent the practical effect of the Eucharist and open several applications of a Christological and Calcedonian understanding of Eucharist in the Patristic Tradition (some sourcesof Saint Symeon’s Eucharistical themes are identified in Saint Cyrill of Alexandria, Evagrius of Pontus, Saint Maximos the Confessor, and Saint John of Damascus). Saint Symeon expresses masterly the sanctification of man through Eucharist, using several new or converted exegetical contexts: The Gospel according to Saint John, the image of fire and light, some eschatological themes, and the theology of divine light.
