Summary/Abstract: The prayer, wherever and whenever it is said, is the event that gives rhythm, gathers and directs all the spiritual forces of man. It is the mirror of the spiritual life of the person, which is why it cannot be reduced to a mere petition, which all too often makes it resemble an economic exchange. In it, God and human beings must see each other, they must stand “face to face”, meeting and discovering each other as persons. This dimension of prayer, known as contemplative prayer, was developed in an almost unique way by Saint Simeon the New Theologian (949-1022), probably the most important mystical writer of Eastern Christianity. In writings full of poetic pathos and spiritual sensitivity, Saint Simeon draws attention to precisely this profound understanding of prayer, namely that the ultimate purpose of prayer, as of any other personal encounter, must be to know the one encountered in order to enter into a deeper communion with him. Therefore, all other aspects of prayer must serve this process of knowing and discovering God.
