Summary/Abstract: This article gives a systematic literature review of the main grammar concepts in Estonian text studies from 2000–2023. The review’s goal is to bring forth main grammar concepts and their functions by genre, but also show the overlapping of writers’ goals when making grammatical choices across different genres. The main grammar concepts were identified by the frequency by which they appeared in the sample. The current analysis revealed three main grammar concepts: expressing the person; modality and nominalization. All of the concepts were clearly connected with other grammatical and lexical choices and they cannot be separated: lexical meanings get their function in the text from grammar. As the language choices are influenced by the text genre, the review explains every main concept within the following genres: media texts, formal texts and curriculum texts (essays, study books etc). In every genre, the use of the main concepts differed because of the text goals, e.g. media texts used modal verbs to say how something should be done, but science study books have little to no modality as they explain abstract phenomena. The review gives a variety of examples of a grammar concept analysed within its context and associated with the writer’s goals. The discussion suggests that more text studies are needed. Genres are dynamic and changing as are the grammatical choices made in specific genres.
