Summary/Abstract: The Mineriades in Romania represent a disturbing and controversial chapter in the country's postcommunist history. From the first violent clashes in January 1990 to the sinister episode of June 1990 and then in 1991 and 1999, the mineriads have remained embedded in the collective memory of the nation as defining events of the transition to democracy. These events were characterised by violent clashes between the forces of law and order and civilian protesters, along with brutal intervention by miners in the industrial areas of the country. The historical context of the miners' attacks was marked by political instability, social tensions and massive economic hardship, as well as political manipulation and power struggles between various interest groups. The consequences of these events were profound and long-lasting, influencing the direction of Romania's democratisation and reinforcing social divisions. In the light of the Mineriads, key questions are raised about the nature of democracy, the rule of law and collective memory in a society in the midst of a post-communist transition.
