Summary/Abstract: This article presents personal contexts which shaped the early days of the nineteenth-century Slavic studies. The analysis has been based on the examples of ten figures of different origin, who make representative pioneers of this science and carried out according to the ethnic criterion and the significance for the systematization of knowledge. Their precursory impact on methodological keys, the choice of issues and sustainability of scientific paradigms were based on individual norms which favoured transformation of, not always verified, intuitions into dogmas and ranked the outstanding individuals in the hierarchy of authorities. This arbitrary judgement may have led to a dictate on their part, especially when shrouded in an aura of genius. But, ultimately, these independent codifiers of knowledge took their prominent place in the era of confrontation of Slavic studies’ arguments with non-Slavic civilizational elements.
