Summary/Abstract: The article presents preliminary results of research on the legacy of Mária Holuby (1851–1919), a Slovak female writer and protestant, which mainly concerns Holuby’s personal notes titled "Tajnosti “Odkliateho zámku”" [Mysteries of the Broken-Curse Castle] (1879–1885), deposited in the Literary Archive of the Slovak National Library in Martin. The text focuses on Holuby’s attitude towards Svetozár Hurban Vajanský (1847–1916) and Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav (1849–1921) – the authority figures in Slovak national culture of the time. "Tajnosti “Odkliateho zámku”" reveals a wide emotional spectrum – from euphoria to moments of breakdown, bitterness and despair, and thus the text is regarded as a draft of a potential publication in which Holuby explains her motivations to write and to enter the literary scene in the early 1880s.
