Advent customs in the vicinity of Čakovec

Summary/Abstract: In this paper, some Međimurje Advent customs and traditions are described. The customs are related to certain days and holidays and are compared with the customs that apply to the customs of Croatia in general. Advent represents the beginning of annual customs because in the past Christmas was considered the beginning of the new year. Customs related to St. Nicholas, St. Lucia and Christmas Eve are presented in more detail. Customs that are explained in more detail are positions, fortune-telling, giving gifts for various occasions, preparations for the coming period and dishes prepared during the Advent period.
