Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses an unknown diary, written in Polish by a Polish noblewoman, Pelagia Rościszewska, between 1819 and 1856, as a rare instance of female autobiographical diurnal writing in Kiev Governorate – the land taken away from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and incorporated into Russia. Bringing the insights of book studies and drawing from the analysis of the material aspect of the diary’s manuscript, the author outlines the possibility of reading this text as a specimen of Polish national identity discourse under Russian imperial rule.
