Summary/Abstract: The COVID-19 epidemic represents the most significant and formidable obstacle of our era. The initial public health catastrophe has evolved into the most profound worldwide economic downturn since the Great Depression. The crisis's severity jeopardizes all the accomplishments made in sustainable development during the last five years, as well as a significant portion of the progress accomplished under the preceding Millennium Development Goals. Although the epidemic impacts everyone, its effects are not distributed evenly. The crisis has brought to the forefront and exacerbated pre-existing disparities both among nations and within them. The impact of this has been most detrimental to countries and populations that are now most vulnerable to experiencing setbacks in their growth. The crisis also impacts megatrends in several manners. For instance, the imposition of limits has led to an increase in online work, which in turn has expedited the process of digitizing the economy and fostered additional technological advancements. However, it is important to note that not all tasks can be completed by online means, and the availability of fast internet connection varies significantly. This indicates that the COVID-19 dilemma is worsening the disparity in access to digital resources and contributing to inequality. From a positive perspective, there has been a reduction in economic activity, leading to a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions as well as air and water pollution. Biodiversity has had a positive change. Nevertheless, if the economic recovery process does not prioritize nature and climate, the benefits achieved may be temporary. Regardless of the severity of the crisis, it presents a significant chance to reassess our institutions, economic and social structures, behavior, and activities. This allows us to reconstruct them in a way that surpasses their previous state, with the aim of firmly redirecting them towards sustainable development. Several governments have implemented decisive and innovative measures and extensive initiatives in addressing the problem. This may augur favorably for a solution to the issue, but that solution should not merely entail a restoration of the previous state.
