Summary/Abstract: Wacław Chodkiewicz (1767–1784) was the first-born son of Samogitian starosta Jan Mikołaj Chodkiewicz and Ludwika Maria née Rzewuska. His parents placed great hopes in him, taking care of his education, necessary for a nobleman in both private life and public functioning. Thus, this article takes a closer look at the course and scope of the young nobleman’s studies. The boy was first educated at home. When he was nine years old he was sent by his parents to Warsaw, where he spent eight years under the tutelage of Professor Martin Nikuta. The rich source material on the basis of which, among other things, the young Chodkiewicz’s stay in the capital, the place of his studies, the subjects he studied, and information about his daily life are reconstructed, is stored in the National Archives in Cracow. The source material is enormous, given the short life of the hero of this article, which was less than 18 years.
