From Gestapo translator to Polish agent. The eventful biography of Willi Zukriegel

Summary/Abstract: This article analyses the cooperation of the former Gestapo translator, Willi Emil Zukriegel, with the Polish Security Service (Służba Bezpieczeństwa – SB). Born in Lodz (Łódź), the German cooperated with the Polish authorities since 1945 and was seen as a vitally important witness in the discovery and punishment of Gestapo agents. After his release from Polish prison in 1956, he emigrated to West Berlin with the permission of the Security Service. From that time onwards he carried out intensive espionage of the Landsmannschaft Weichsel-Warthe (LWW) and reported on its official life in Berlin as well as on the discussions on the Berlin and Cuban crises. The SB, thanks to his help, got access to the membership file of the Berlin LWW and was well informed about its attempts to contact Germans and Protestants in central Poland. After 1962, the intensity of the reports decreased. Zukriegel’s activity furthered the penetration by the Polish Security Service, and provided, above all, information about the activities of former Gestapo members and National Socialists from Lodz.
