Summary/Abstract: After founding an art school in Tartu in 1919, the Pallas art society intended to establish a modern art museum in Tartu different from the Estonian National Museum and the Art Museum of Estonia. Actually, the modern art museum was founded as late as 1940, when Estonia had been annexed by Russia. The idea of the museum was realised by intellectuals who supported the new regime. During World War II, the new art collection began to grow as a result of abandoned property. After the war, the Tartu Art Museum was reorganised according to the Soviet art system. The aim of its exhibitions was to popularise ideologically and socially oriented Estonian and Soviet art at changing exhibitions. In the changed circumstances of the 1980s, the Tartu Art Museum set as its main aim finding rooms for a permanent exhibition of Estonian art. The article provides additional information on the history of the museum by describing different aspects of the organisation of exhibitions from 1975 to 1990.
