Summary/Abstract: The main purpose of the essay is to present Marek Baterowicz’s interest in Mediterranean culture and history. First of all some aspects of his biography are presented, including his fight for a passport and his exile. Subsequently, his achievements in the fields of poetry and translation (from Spanish, French and Italian) are analyzed and discussed. Moreover, the presence of Mediterranean motifs in Baterowicz’s writings is examined in order to sum up the dialogue with romanitas. Finally, the question of the situation of the artist in postmodern civilisation is posed.
