The Black Notebook: On the Nonexistent but Possible Poems of Wisława Szymborska

Summary/Abstract: I attempted to read Wisława Szymborska’s notebook containing notes on her poems –both the written and unwritten ones. Among them, I found and organized the themescharacteristic of Szymborska’s poetry. I propose a rhetorical and genetic reading of themand use the category of anastylosis to imagine the poems that might have been written.I also reflect on the ontological status of the notes (fragment, element, prefabricatedcomponent, radical) and encourage an in-depth study of the “black notebook.”
