Summary/Abstract: The article elucidates how Florian Znaniecki and his students understand theautobiographical and subjective nature of competition memoirs. Moreover, the textidentifies what importance they attribute to the two traits in determining the scientificusefulness of memoirs, particularly in drawing conclusions about the supraindividualreality based on these writings. The author analyzes texts by Polish Institute of Sociologyby referring to four situation types that best describe the competition entries in termsof autobiographical nature and subjectivity. Finally, the article argues that – although forresearch purposes memoirs should ideally be both autobiographical and subjective –subjectivity alone suffices to treat them as credible sources of knowledge about culturalreality.
