Summary/Abstract: The aim of this research paper is to highlight the formative dimension of children's literature, a literary area heavily belittled and often ignored. Placed in a marginal sphere of literature, that of paraliterature (reconsidering its role in the context of readers' formation and development), children's literature actually veils complex aesthetic-literary mechanisms that require special attention and skill on the part of authors. In this paper, we have highlighted the main formative and educational valences of children's literature, dismantling the false assumption that the target audience of children's literature consists exclusively of children and schoolchildren with minor acquisitions, or that writers of children's literature do not have the skills and capabilities necessary to write a novel intended for the mature reading public. The stake of the paper is, therefore, to propose a perspective that (re)positions children's literature at the rank of literature proper, and not paraliterature.
