Summary/Abstract: The Marcal valley is a detached, inner periphery of the north-western part of the country, which can be considered developed in terms of Hungarian conditions. The Marcal valley requires a regional interpretation to be managed by regional development and provides an opportunity to plan future development interventions. Attention-grabbing economic and social problems can be seen in the districts of Devecser, Sümeg, Zalaszentgrót and Vasvár located in the southern water catchment area of the river. The authors used the Regional Scorecard (RSC) methodology during the basic level examination. With this method the authors highlight the territorial extent and territorial stratification of the problems and delimit the target area in order to determine the direction of further investigations.
